The owner and editor of Daytona's newspaper felt that the City of Daytona needed a new performing arts center as the catalyst for redevelopment of the downtown. A long time thespian and board member of the Daytona Civic Theatre, he commissioned a complete study for a new center that would become the new home of the Civic Theatre. The study included economic impact, program requirements for both local and outside events, operations implications, operating cost, seating number criteria, analysis of existing facilities along US Highway 1 and an architectural design study. The concept and design was recognized by an award from the AIA Florida Section in 2000.
