Although both Ted Jones & Van Phillips had extensive experience in performance venue architectural consultation when they established Jones & Phillips Associates in 1974, their experience was tied to more traditional performance facilities. With Mr. Jones' professional resume rooted in his design experience for opera and orchestral music and that of Mr. Phillips' based extensively in theatre, dance and television/film, it was logical for their initial clients to originate within those performance types.
Gradually, based upon successful projects and satisfied clients, architects began to ask if the firm could expand their consulting services to include the performance related features of indoor arenas, convention centers, and large worship centers. By 1985 Jones & Phillips had established an expanded resume well beyond that typically found in the "Theatre Consulting" profession. While competitive firms have explored expanding into these alternative performance/and performance worship facility venues, Jones & Phillips Associates' early entry into those types of projects has lead to a portfolio that remains unequaled in the industry.
Because of some early examples, such as "The Ball" at Disney's Epcot entry, architects became aware of the power lighting design could have in bringing their buildings to life after dark. They also found that Theatrical Lighting Designers brought creative and different ideas into play that were not normally achieved with a more engineered approach. Lighting controls typically used in theatre and opera production had also begun to influence the controls for architectural lighting. It was therefore a logical step for one convention center architect to ask the four professional lighting designers at Jones & Phillips Associates to provide interior and exterior lighting and control design. Today that architectural lighting work has taken the firm into projects throughout the world where performing arts is not a major feature of everyday life.
