Just a few short weeks after the death of beloved icon Red Skelton, the Vincennes University Board of Trustees proposed to fund construction of a performing arts center in his memory. Vincennes University and the state of Indiana believe that the legacy of Red Skelton should be preserved to share with future generations. His accomplishments and humanitarian achievements are an inspiration to people of all ages.
The plans for the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center call for an expansive and architecturally intriguing facility worthy of this American legend.
The center will features an 851 seat auditorium used to showcase new and up-coming talented actors and performers. The auditorium will also host the University's theatrical and musical productions along with special events such as convocations and conventions. In addition to the auditorium, the center will also include classrooms, rehearsal rooms, and dressing rooms. The entrance to the center will serve as a gallery for Red Skelton's vast collection of artwork, including paintings, figurines, statues, and movie posters. The center is planned to eventually include a museum to house the memorabilia and items that belonged to Red Skelton. The collection, donated by Mrs. Skelton, includes costumes worn by the actor as Clem Kadiddlehopper, Sheriff Deadeye, Freddie the Freeloader, and other memorable characters. Part of the exhibit also includes Red Skelton's childhood home. This collection will be used to tell the story of the journey of Mr. Skelton's life from humble beginnings to great American artist.
The Red Skelton Performing Arts Center is currently under construction with planned opening sometime next year. The center is located at Vincennes University in Skelton's home town of Vincennes, Indiana.
